Opera in three acts
Text by Nicola Francesco Haym after Pierre Corneille
Premiered in 1725
In co-production with the Teatro Real, Madrid, the Opéra de Lyon
and the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Barcelona
In Italian with German and English
In a dispute over the succession to the throne, Bertarido killed his own brother but was forced to flee Milan when his overpowering ally Grimoaldo arrived. He left his wife Rodelinda and son Flavio behind. From exile, he spread the rumour of his death and secretly returned to Milan. Grimoaldo, originally betrothed to Bertarido's sister Eduige, woos Rodelinda. But the Queen of the Lombards wants to remain faithful to Bertarido even after his death. The victim of the cruel intrigue is her son Flavio. He is taken hostage and becomes a pawn in the power struggle. Claus Guth's 2017 production tells the exciting story from Flavio's perspective. The child's perspective brings us all the closer to the fate of the characters involved. Handel's multifaceted, highly emotional music unfolds its full charm, authenticated by the realistically depicted events, which are also expressed in poetic images.
