The New Old Town

The smallest district in all of Frankfurt

Facts and
information

Frankfurt's smallest district with its idyllic location on the River Main is once again complete. After a long period of construction between the Römer and Emperors' Cathedral, the once-in-a-century New Old Town restoration project was completed in 2018

Frankfurt's New Old Town is a centre of attraction for one and all. Locals and visitors from all over the world meet here for a coffee, to visit the numerous museums and independent shops and  to enjoy the old-world flair in the heart of the Main metropolis.

This successful blend is a reminder of Frankfurt's eventful history as a European metropolis. At the Archaeological Gardens, young and old alike may marvel at the traces of the ancient Roman settlement and a Carolingian imperial palace, explained by way of an exciting video animation. Alternatively, they may also follow in the footsteps of kings and emperors on their way to their coronation along the Coronation Route.

  • Around 200 persons live in the 35 houses in Frankfurt's New Old Town, 15 of which are faithful reconstructions, while the remaining 20 are new buildings.

  • Numerous shops, cafés, museums and plazas invite you to stay a while.

  • The Stadthaus, the old town's conference centre, is located in the heart of the quarter, making it easily accessible by subway, and tram, the stops being situated right outside the New Old Town.

  • It is possible to drive directly to the DomRömer underground car park in the old town by car.

Things to Do and Things to See

in the New Frankfurt Old Town

Frankfurt's recently remodelled old town presents itself as a blend of fresh buildings and loving recreations of times gone by. At the Shock-Haired Peter Museum, which is hidden away in the “Hinter dem Lämmchen” laneway, the memory of Heinrich Hoffmann, the Frankfurt physician who created a piece of world literature with his Shock-Haired Peter in 1844, lives on. Not far away, the “Weißer Bock” townhouse pays tribute to Friedrich Stoltze, an advocate of democracy whose dialect poems continue to express his love for Frankfurt to this day.
