Small but "fine": the mini café in the former drinking hall in the Wallanlagen is the open-air living room for everyone in Nordend.
Plush armchairs, wooden tables with bouquets of flowers and silver trays on which coffee and pastries are served: Wasserhäuschen Fein lives up to its name. It's not just the cakes and snacks that are fine here, but also the lovingly decorated café. The small round building in the ramparts is one of almost 800 water houses that were built throughout Frankfurt from the second half of the 19th century onwards. As it was unhealthy to drink tap water back then, workers increasingly resorted to drinking schnapps or beer. To counteract this, the city subsidised the construction of water houses in which "Bizzelwasser", i.e. mineral water, was offered. Over time, the houses developed into kiosks, drinking halls and social meeting places. Some have remained so to this day. But this one is particularly "fine" with its chandelier hanging from the ceiling and the open-air living room in front of the door.
