The Museum Quarter is a visual expression of its transformation from a museum specialising in history to a modern city museum.
The major exhibitions of the historical museum are ‘Frankfurt Then?’ on the history of the city and ‘Frankfurt Now!’, which explores the present day and the future of the city. The model of the present-day city in the new exhibition ‘Frankfurt Now!’ measures an impressive 70 m2, based on 1,500 questionnaires that the museum collected from Frankfurt inhabitants in all 42 districts of the city. At the lower floors are the large ‘Snow Globe’ and the ‘Staufer port’, an archaeological find between the entrance building and the historical Saalhof. Where am I; what kind of city is this? How did it become what it is today? And what makes Frankfurt different from other cities? “Typical Frankfurt!” in the large Snow Globe provides clever and entertaining answers to these questions. Eight models designed by artists show the very different faces of Frankfurt.
The historical museum works according to a ‘guiding principle of inclusion’. Barrier-free construction is just one of many measures to make the museum easily accessible for people with physical disabilities. The aim is to give visitors an enriching visit to the museum, regardless of their impairments and abilities.
