Around 3,000 sculptures from five millennia await you in this Wilhelminian-style villa on the banks of the River Main. Don't miss: the beautiful garden and café!
Through an enchanting garden, you enter the Wilhelminian-style villa of the Bohemian textile manufacturer Baron Heinrich von Liebieg from 1896 - and into a collection of sculptures spanning almost 5,000 years. The oldest exhibit is the figure of a praying man from ancient Mesopotamia, the most recent works are classicist representations from the 19th century. In between: Masterpieces from Egyptian, Greek and Roman antiquity, from the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Baroque periods. The city bought the villa back in 1907 in order to expand it and house its sculpture collection here on the banks of the Main. You can not only marvel at them in the Liebieghaus, you can also learn more about the art of sculpture on guided tours or with an audio guide - for example, that the sculptures of Greek antiquity were once brightly coloured rather than gleaming white. One more tip if you need a break in between: the Liebieghaus is not only known for its sculptures, but also for the delicious cakes and quiches in its café.
