After the museum’s founding in 1981, the architect Hans Hollein was commissioned to design a building for it in Domstrasse.
For the triangular parcel he created a triangular structure which, owing to its unusual shape, is affectionately referred to by the Frankfurters as the “piece of cake”. Thanks to the spatial expansion brought about by the new branch in the TaunusTurm, the main building can now feature the Collection’s highlights and classics on a permanent basis. In addition to the presentation of works from the holdings, the MMK also uses ist post-modern architectural icon to stage major changing exhibitions and retrospectives of prominent artists of the present from all over the world.
