The evergreen on the Museumsufer: Frankfurt's largest art museum displays works from the Old Masters to the present day, as well as temporary exhibitions.
The banker Johann Friedrich Städel had an art museum like the Louvre or the Uffizi in mind for Frankfurt - and when he died in 1816, he left his hometown not only his fortune, but also his art collection. This has since been expanded to more than 100,000 works from seven centuries thanks to the generous commitment of citizens. In addition to the changing exhibitions, we particularly recommend the permanent exhibition - a kind of best of from the Middle Ages to the present day. Here you can see works by Old Masters such as Johannes Vermeer and Sandro Botticelli, and modern artists such as Edvard Munch, Claude Monet and Lotte Laserstein. And in addition to contemporary art, for example by Andy Warhol or Gerhard Richter, the Städel also has an outstanding collection of photographic art. With its high-calibre collection, the museum is considered one of the most important art museums in Germany. And it became the nucleus for Frankfurt's unique cultural area here on the banks of the Main: 39 museums throughout the city have now joined forces to form the Museumsufer. Incidentally, the museum founder also contributed to the quality of the Städel collection with an unusual passage in his will: Anything that was not absolutely top-class could be sold in order to acquire better works.
In addition to the exhibition, since the end of March 2024 you can enjoy an unforgettable panoramic view of the city from the visitor terrace on the roof of the Städel Museum!
