Petra is the name of the lady who is the absolute heavyweight at Frankfurt Zoo. The hippopotamus weighs more than 1.5 tonnes, which is more than the other 5,400 or so animal inhabitants. Frankfurt Zoo covers an area of eleven hectares and is one of the most visited zoos in Germany with more than 700,000 visitors a year. It was first established in 1858 on a trial basis: after ten years, the aim was to see whether the concept of the facility - then still in Leers' Garden in the west of Frankfurt - would really work. The zoo owes the fact that it has developed so well to its most prominent director. From 1957, he flew over the Tanzanian national park together with his son Michael in a Dornier Do 27 in zebra livery. The same aircraft, albeit not the original, can be seen in the zoo today. Incidentally, today's guests' favourite animal is the meerkat; no other species is sponsored more.
