Frankfurt has been selected as one of ten German cities to host the UEFA EURO 2024. With its riverside fan zone, Frankfurt will be offering football enthusiasts a vibrant atmosphere for the duration of the men’s continental football tournament. From 14th June to 14th July, the metropolis on the River Main will be celebrating the tournament and its participants with a massive open-air football festival following the competition’s official motto, “United by Football. Vereint im Herzen Europas”.
Football fans from all across the globe will be able to experience that unique football feeling not only in the city’s main stadium, to be renamed “Frankfurt Arena” for the duration of the tournament, but also throughout the metropolis and, in particular, at the 1.4-kilometre-long fan zone on the northern bank of the River Main. Organised by the Frankfurt Tourist+Congress Board (TCF), this fan zone will be able to accommodate up to 30,000 persons. It will be open for the entire EURO 2024 championships, including on match-free days.
A total of ten LED screens will be set up between the Friedensbrücke and Eiserner Steg bridges along the riverside, guaranteeing unhindered viewing all throughout the fan zone. Best of all, each and every one of EURO 2024’s 51 matches will be broadcast live and uncut. The most impressive of all the viewing options available is sure to be the 144-square-metre floating screen moored on the edge of the river near Friedensbrücke.
And so, the fan zone with its views of the river and the museum embankment on the opposite side provides a truly unique setting for the continent’s foremost football competition. The events to be held at the fan zone during the UEFA EURO 2024 promise to be no less exciting than those of the FIFA World Cup 2006, where a similar floating screen provided an equally grand public viewing spectacle that attracted media attention from around the world.
An audiovisual opening ceremony has been planned to take place near Flößerbrücke prior to the start of the tournament, most likely on the evening of 12th June. The ceremony will see the eastern side of the bridge veiled in the colours of EURO 2024, setting the stage for a brilliant choreography of light and sound, with the Frankfurt skyline serving as its imposing backdrop.
The preliminary group matches to be held at Frankfurt Arena will feature Belgium, Slovakia and Romania of Group E, England and Denmark of Group C as well as Switzerland and Germany of Group A. One Round-of-16 match will also be held at the stadium, which is scenically set in Frankfurt’s city forest. Frankfurt Arena is conveniently located no more than five kilometres from the football festival on the River Main. Situated in the heart of Frankfurt, the fan zone will be presenting itself as a truly unique social event. The fan experience is as close to the real thing – the actual stadium visit – as possible. With its impressive skyline backdrop, the riverside fan zone invites football fans as well as those simply interested in experiencing the festive atmosphere to spend a few entertaining hours in scenic surrounds beneath skies of blue.
Aside from the public viewing sessions, the fan zone will also be offering a daily programme of events for the entire family and football fans of all ages. Concerts will be held on four separate stages, with countless activities for young and old taking place throughout the fan zone. On match-free days, special attractions will be luring visitors to the riverside, like open-air cinema showing specially selected films under starry skies.
One particular highlight of the fan zone is sure to be the “floating pitch” – a miniature football field swimming on the River Main. Aside from this unusual playing area, the fan zone will also feature two further small-sized football fields, inviting fans to a casual kickabout. The Sepp Herberger Foundation, named after Germany’s first World Cup-winning manager, is already planning an inclusive football tournament on one of these two pitches. Football action of the digital variety will also be featured, thereby satisfying the desires of all eSport fans. Here, they’ll find gaming consoles for imitating the skills of their EURO idols or challenging players from other host cities, while also getting the chance to watch eSport professionals do their thing. Last but certainly not least, UEFA has made sure that special focus during all of these activities is placed on environmental and social sustainability, the encouragement of volunteer work and the promotion of popular sport in general.
Numerous food and beverage stalls spread out across the fan zone will ensure that audiences have a varied culinary range to choose from. With all of these offers and attractions, by kick-off of the opening match on 14th June, the Frankfurt Fan Zone Main Embankment will truly be “United by Football. Vereint im Herzen Europas”.
