The absolute classic among Frankfurt's pubs: Goethe already celebrated – and languished – here
Frankfurt's city centre is only two or three kilometres away – and yet it feels quite far away. For generations, Frankfurters have been flocking to the pub in the countryside, right on the banks of the Main: Even Goethe liked to come and celebrate his 66th birthday here - he had fallen in love with Marianne, the wife of a banker some 35 years his junior, who used the house as a private summer residence at the time. The building was actually erected in the early 16th century as a flour mill; a tanner later took over. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the idyllic building has been used as a restaurant.
Today, you can enjoy classic German dishes outside in the secluded beer garden or inside in the elegant dining room and conservatory, as well as Frankfurt specialities such as Tafelspitz or schnitzel with green sauce and Himmel und Erde for starters.
And if, like Goethe, you don't want to leave: the hotel is also a design hotel with 13 rooms and six suites; the latter are named after personalities who enriched Goethe's life. One of them is called Marianne, of course.
