Long a city in its own right, today a district with many contrasts: Höchst fascinates with its mix of half-timbered facades, castle, Main promenade - and social meeting culture.
You should start your visit to Höchst on the banks of the Main - the most beautiful entrance to this district: here, a good eight kilometres west of the city centre, Frankfurt's only passenger ferry crosses the Main. From the wide promenade, you can already see Höchst's most important sights towering behind the thick city wall: the three-aisled Justinus Church from the 9th century, one of the oldest churches in Germany. And the two castles, which were long the residence of the officials of the Mainz archbishopric. Today, jazz concerts are regularly held in the cellar of the Old Palace; the courtyard, terrace and park are popular as vantage points over the Main and as meeting places for picnics or sundowners. Höchst itself was a separate town until 1928, and even though it is now a district of Frankfurt, it has retained its own character. Around the Schlossplatz square, the half-timbered façades of the listed old town of Höchst give it an almost village-like flair. And just a few steps away, there is a charming weekly market on three mornings at the Höchst market. The market café in the market hall is also open then - and is revitalising the "social meeting culture" by its own account.
