Museums, exhibitions and so much more

The Museum Embankment Festival for culture-lovers

The Museum Embankment Festival without museums?

As the name suggests: That's impossible!

The museums and the museum embankment are not only the namesake of this magnificent three-day festival, but also its main attraction. Imagine strolling along the banks of the River Main on a warm summer evening, a colourful world of art and culture spreading out before you. This is Frankfurt's magnificent Museum Embankment Festival.

Every year since the festival's inception in the 1980s, the riverside promenade is transformed into a lively stage for culture and the arts. What began as an idea to highlight Frankfurt's many museums is now one of the city's most popular cultural celebrations. Every year at the end of August, visitors come here from near and far to experience culture's colourful diversity.

The annual

dragon-boat race

Following a rhythmic drumbeat, 20 paddles plunge in unison into the water for a fraction of a second. The spray splashes up from the narrow bow upon which the mythical Chinese creature is enthroned.

Frankfurt's famous dragon-boat races have been an integral part of the Museum Embankment Festival for more than three decades. After the starting signal is given at “Untermainbrücke”, the fastest boats reach the finish line at the “Holbeinsteg” in less than two minutes (Distance: 420 metres).

There, a special feature of this race awaits the 22-strong boat crew: The drummer of the leading boat must ring a bell lowered at the Holbeinsteg bridge: Only then is victory truly secured.
